The Shelter Island conference in 1947 was the stimulus for many of the important advances in quantum field theory following World War II. Schwinger, Feynman, Tomonaga, and Dyson were the principal contributors during the initial phase of these developments. This article attempts to reconstruct the genesis of Feynman's formulation of quantum electrodynamics, focusing principally on the period from 1947 to 1950. © 1986 The American Physical Society URL:
